Of all of the bills that many of us deal with on a regular basis, there are few that can be more significant than our energy bills. A lot of the time we resign ourselves to the cost of these bills, but the truth is that there are always plenty of ways that you can reduce your energy bills by a pretty significant margin.

Double glazing

Double glazing might come with an initial investment but it’s one that more than pays for itself over time. The amount of heat that escapes through your windows is genuinely shocking and being able to prevent that means that you’re going to have to spend a whole lot less energy heating your home.

More efficient appliances

As useful as your appliances can be, they also use a whole lot of energy if you don’t get the right ones. The reality is that they bring your energy bills up to a point where they really no longer justify the convenience they provide. There are, however, plenty of appliances that are a lot more energy efficient than the ones that you may already be using that can save you a whole lot of energy and money.

Change your behaviour

One of the easiest things that you can do if you want to start saving money on your energy bills is to change your own behaviour. Things like leaving lights on, leaving your heating on all the time, and running water for extended periods can all drive up your energy bills massively. By making some small changes you can brings those bills right down.

While you may well enjoy the heat that your boiler brings (who doesn’t?) it’s possible you’ve never considered exactly how it all works.

It might seem like magic, but boilers are actually rather simple devices. In fact, when you get to the bare basics, they’re not all that dissimilar to the fires that our ancestors used for hundreds of years.

Of course, there is a little bit more to the different boiler types, etc., but let’s first look at the fundamentals of how boilers of all kinds provide the heat you need. This is by far the easiest thing to understand, and can be broken down into three simple steps –

  1. Oil or gas enters your boiler through an external pipe.
  2. Your boiler creates energy by burning that fuel.
  3. A heat exchanger then heats water that’s then sent around your home heating system.

So far so simple, but what about different boiler types? We’ve all heard the terms combi-boiler, conventional boiler, and so on, but what exactly sets them apart? Honestly, this isn’t as complicated as you might imagine either and largely comes down to considerations such as –

  • Do you need a water tank? (Yes, for conventional boilers, no for combi boilers)
  • Are they efficient? (Really depends on house size, heating needs)
  • Are they affordable? (Again, this depends on your needs)
